With the Budget for the economic year 2019 being announced, there are quite a few changes to the existing regime. One new addition- “Nari Tu Naraayani” Scheme-has been a hot topic of discussion in the past few hours, owing to it’s target population, women.
About The Scheme
Finance Minister for this tenure, Nirmala Sitharaman, introduced this scheme during her maiden Budget by quoting Swami Vivekanand’s words, “It is not possible for a bird to fly on one wing”. The meaning behind this phrase was clear to all-women need to participate at a much higher degree for the country to make real progress, as a whole. She further acknowledged the influence of women on the rural development in India.
She further stated that the government ‘wishes to facilitate the role of women’.
According to her, Nari Tu Naarayani is a committee set in place to ensure the proper allocation of resources for the welfare of the fairer sex. She further elaborated on the plan to expand the SGF Programme and extend a loan of Rs 1 Lakh to women.
During her speech, she said, “Naari tu narayani is country’s tradition. There is no chance for welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved. The government believes social-economic transformation is taking place because of women participation in last one decade. We have a record 78 women in this house”, to further strengthen her stance.
The Public Reacts
The move has met with wide applause on social media, especially Twitter.
However, as with all other government policies, this one too, seems to have left some people unimpressed, and doubtful of whether the new slogan will truly improve the condition of women.
The slogan had caused up a stir initially, due to many being confused over whether it read “Nari Tu Naraayani” (Woman, you are goddess) or “Nari to Naraayani” (Woman to goddess). However, it was later cleared up when it was confirmed that the slogan reads the former.
The minister further impressed that the government is one which believed that the welfare women is central to the development of the country.
