Two sides of a coin: Sona Mohapatra tweet on Movie KABIR SINGH
In today’s world, education is playing an important role in making people intellectually aware. The constitution of India in article 19(1)(a) grants to its people fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression. Social media has become an important medium for this expression. Ideas of people spread among large population in just click of a button.
People use popular sites like Twitter and Facebook to give views on issues related to politics, feminism, sports, human rights like women rights, rights of LGBTQ community, economics, education including books and so on. These popular sites become platform for heated debates on topics related to entertainment industry like the upcoming movie, wedding of movie stars etc. People today are not scared of openly providing criticism on what they feel is disturbing the peace of society.
Recently one such debate came up on social media platform and spread like a fire in a forest. It is related to recently released movie KABIR SINGH. Leading role in the movie is played by famous actor Shahid Kapoor. It is becoming popular among audience day by day. Some of them are appreciating the movie and others are providing negative reviews.
One of the strongest criticism to the movie came from famous singer Sona Mohapatra. Who did not like the role of a aggressive lover played by Shahid in the movie. Through her tweets she expressed her views that she did not like the male chauvinist character played by Shahid Kapoor. She tweeted that movie glorified and normalised misogyny and patriarchy. She even lashed out at Shahid for being irresponsible on choosing to play a part which potrayed such misleading ideas. She also provided criticism to chairperson of national commission of women Rekha Sharma for her ignorant behaviour.
Her tweets were not appreciated by defenders of the movies who in response provided a strong opposition to her comments. One of the defender named Juli Patasahani went forward to tweet that Sona Mohapatra too sang songs like “bedardi raja” which were quite misleading as they showed women in a negative light. This debate of tweeting and retweeting is still on. Sona is fighting off all trolls and is criticising other reviewers by even calling them moron. Shahid Kapoor reacted to this by saying that movie wasn’t misleading but showed the reality and that movies Cannot always be idealist and positive.
Before getting swayed away by all the ruckus created by the tweet we need to look both sides of the coin. As defender of the tweet we may say that women since ages have faced a lot of decrimination and humiliation therefore showing such movies where women are objectified can be misleading. There should be check on such movies by censor board. Movies encouraging women empowerment should be shown in large number.
On the other side of coins as defender of the movie we should see movies as just a source of entertainment and not make issues about small things. Social media sometimes exaggerate issues and becomes misleading. Moreover Kabir Singh was Adult rated movie so it’s ability to influence major younger section of society does not come to forefront. There are thousands of movies released in India showing item songs that objectify women therefore we cannot go on providing criticism.
Therefore as aware citizens we must look at the both sides of a coin and take positive as well as negative lessons from movies.
