The moon is the special object that has captured hearts and imaginations for as long as we can remember the key to our past and the way to the future. The world has always been fascinated with the moon and we have paid our closest neighbour many visits over the past centuries.
1959 -> Soviet Union Lunar-2 man made mission.
1966 -> Lunar-9 made the ever soft landing.
1969 -> Apollo- 11 manned mission to land on the moon
1969-1972 -> 20 people travelled to the moon and 12 of them could come back to tell us what it was like.
As we watched all of this in all we knew we had to leave our mark too.
On 22nd October,2008. India launched Chandrayaan – I.
—> We found water on the moon.
—> Chandrayaan -I gave science a whole new prospective drawing attention.
Chandrayaan -II is an Indian Lunar Mission that will boldly go where no country has ever gone before – the moon’s south polar region. The mission is developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
It consists of Lunar Orbiter, the Vikram lander and the Pragyan Lunar Rover.
The mission was launched on Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark (GSLV) from the Satish Dhawan Space Center on Sriharikota Island.
VIKRAM LANDER :- The mission lander is known as Vikram which means ‘Valour’ named after Vikram Sarabhai who was widely regarded as the founder of the Indian space programme.
Vikram spacecraft apparently crash-landed. The lander’s location has been spotted on the surface via thermal imaging, but its condition is unknown.
Vikram had developed a problem, gone silent and had crashed at the fag end of a perfect journey, along with the stillborn rover. Some 20 minutes later, ISRO Chairman K. Sivan announced that contact had been lost with Vikram and that ISRO was piecing together its last set of data.
PRAGYAN ROVER :- The mission’s rover is called as Pragyan which means ‘Wisdom’. With a mass of 27kgs has operated on solar power. The rover moves on 6 wheels traversing 500 meters on the lunar surface. The expected operating time of Pragyan rover was one lunar day or 14 earth days,as its electronics were not designed to endure the frigid lunar night.
